School's 'Grow with Byrkley' Competition

On Saturday 4th July Byrkley Garden Centre played host to hundreds of local schoolchildren and their dwarf kidney bean plants, which they had grown from seed, for the judging of this year’s School’s 'Grow with Byrkley' Competition.

This year 24 local schools and over 1720 children took part making this our most successful competition to date. A great day was had by all with plenty of things going on to keep everyone entertained whilst the judges (Ed James from Heart FM, Paul Steed from ESBC and Wendy Prestidge from Byrkley Garden Centre) reached their difficult decision.

First prize went to Joe Knowles from Belmont Primary School, with Alicia Halliwell from Church Broughton CE Primary School and Georgia Evison from Rykneld Couty Primary School taking 2nd and 3rd prizes.  As well as a selection of goodies for themselves, each child won Byrkley Garden Centre vouchers for their respective schools (£150 Vouchers for 1st prize, £100 Vouchers for 2nd prize and £75 Vouchers for 3rd prize).  There were free goody bags for the first 300 children to bring their plant into the Centre and one child from each of the 24 schools was awarded a Best in School prize.   The coveted teacher’s prize went to Penny Vale from Newhall Infant & Nursery School, and the special prize of a wooden bench for the school playground was awarded to Church Broughton CE Primary School for having the highest percentage of entries.
